Bridgend Crown Post Office

Last week, the consultation period closed on plans by the Post Office to relocate its Bridgend Dunraven Place Crown Post Office branch to the WH Smith store in The Rhiw Shopping Centre. Many local people and regular customers took the opportunity to express their views on the proposals. I know the plans have received a mixed response and I am aware of concerns raised by some traders in the town. From my conversations with constituents and from my own post bag, the only issue causing some concern centres on access issues. With the Post Office proposed to be located on the lower ground floor of the retail unit, I know that representatives from Post Office Ltd have spoken to disability groups to ensure that there will be step free access from the shop entrance to the Post Office Counter.

Whilst the move is considered not ideal for some, I would prefer to see the Post Office in WH Smith than not have one at all. In other towns and cities, there are some very good examples of where WH Smith has taken in the Post Office with an increased footfall. They have also retained many as Crown Post Offices. In Bridgend, I am pleased to see that the branch will continue to operate as a Crown Post Office. The Post Office will still be directly run by Post Office Ltd and their team will run the Post Office counter from within the WH Smith store.
