Proposed new medical centre for Porthcawl

I know many of you turned out last month to attend Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board’s Public Engagement Day giving details about the proposed medical centre for Porthcawl. There were a number of Exhibition Boards pointing out exactly where the site was, an artist’s impression of the centre and the proposed layout inside the building. On hand at the Public Engagement Day were representatives from ABMU, local GPs, the Community Health Council and the architect, Jim Hart, to answer questions and to hear feedback on the proposal.

There have been a variety of comments received. I know that some local residents who live near the site have concerns about the potential traffic implications, whilst others have concerns about access to the proposed medical centre. Some people have also asked why the proposed medical centre cannot be located in the town centre.

Whilst the site is not in the perfect location for everyone, we cannot ignore the fact that the current GP surgery sites and the Annexe from which the Community Services are provided are no longer fit for purpose. I don’t think anyone would argue against a brand new medical centre which can deliver the better healthcare services which meet the standards that patients expect and indeed demand. This issue has been ongoing for eight years and nobody wants to be having this conversation in another eight years time.

If planning permission is granted then work on site could start as early as April 2016.

Finally, I would like to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
