A new constitutional settlement for the UK?

Talking about the constitution of the UK is currently a hot topic. It is something that Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones is deeply passionate about and to this end, he was delighted to spend an evening in Aberystwyth University with the Constitution Reform Group (CRG) discussing a proposed new constitutional settlement for the UK.

The CRG’s Act of Union Bill proposes a new federal structure for the UK and establishes the principle of self-determination for the nations and parts of the United Kingdom.

Chairing the event was the Head of the Department of Law and Criminology at Aberystwyth University Professor Emyr Lewis. On the panel with Mr Jones were leading constitutional expert Sir Paul Silk and former Labour Minister Gisela Stuart.

Mr Jones said “I have consistently argued that Brexit done badly carries with it the seed of the UK’s own disintegration and I have been concerned about the Prime Minister’s ‘do or die approach to Brexit. Brexit certainly presents us with a chance to rethink the way the United Kingdom works as a historic union of nations, to ensure fairness and mutual respect between the four nations of the UK”.
