Bridgend Assembly Member Carwyn Jones was delighted to hear about the successful Young Consumers of the Year Competition held by Trading Standards in Bridgend Count Borough Council last month.
The Young Consumers of the Year Competition is a unique competition for schools and youth groups in Wales, England and Scotland which tests students on a wide range of issues including consumer and law, food and health, safety and the environment as well as managing money and finance. The aim of the competition is to educate student of their consumer responsibilities and rights before they begin higher education or enter the world of work.
Teenagers from schools across Bridgend county borough displayed an incredible depth of knowledge when they took part in the knockout quiz. Ten local secondary schools consisting of teams of four 14-17 year olds took part in the competition, held in the council chamber at the Civic Offices in Bridgend.
During the final, teams from Porthcawl, Pencoed, Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen, Maesteg, Cynffig and last year’s winners, Brynteg, all battled it out in the nail-biting contest. A victorious Porthcawl pipped Pencoed by eight points, winning with 74 points in total with Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen coming in third place
Assembly Member for Bridgend and former Brynteg Comprehensive student Carwyn Jones lent his support to the competition, sending a letter of encouragement and best wishes to all competing schools, which was read out to the pupils before the competition kicked off.
The AM said “It was great to hear about the high quality performance from all teams competing in the competition with the knowledge being shown by the students, being more impressive than ever before. I am pleased that due to this competition, students know a lot more about their consumer rights as well as the numerous ways Trading Standards work to protect residents from issues such as scams and rogue traders. I want to congratulate all the teams involved in the competition for their hard work and wish Porthcawl Comprehensive the best of luck in the Welsh Regional Final competition taking place at Cardiff City Stadium in March 2015.”
