Art for Arts Sake
Throughout August, visitors to the Welsh Assembly’s Pierhead Building had the additional pleasure of enjoying a special exhibition of paintings by the Porthcawl Art Society. The exhibition entitled ‘Art for Art’s Sake’, was held in the Futures Gallery at the Pierhead Building. It ran from the 8th August to the 31st August 2017 and showcased a range of work. I was delighted to sponsor this event.
There was a range of paintings including ‘Heading for the Shade’, ‘Poppies on Grey’, ‘End of Shift’, ‘African Sunset”, ‘Butterflies and Blackberries’, ‘Lochness Sunset’, ‘Wild Garden’, ‘Rest Bay’, ‘Thunder in the Valley’, ‘Jaguar’, ‘Off Capri’, ‘Beach Huts’ and many more. There were 40 paintings in total with a number of artists displaying their work. The paintings were fantastic and I had quite a few favourities. There was a lot of interest in the exhibition and many people took leaflets about the Porthcawl Art Society.
Jennings- a new lease of life
It is fantastic to see the Jennings Building brought back into use and I was delighted to attend the official opening event a few weeks ago. Fifty years ago, the redevelopment of a building such as this would have involved it being knocked down so it is good to see that the building has been restored sympathetically. What a transformation from when I last visited in November 2015. It was also interesting to see some of the ‘live-work’ units and to visit the businesses based there. I am sure that this development will help to kickstart other exciting projects in Porthcawl.
