It was lovely to take part in National Storytelling Week last month at Mumbles Pier. The week-long event was organised by the events team at the Pier and every day a number of guest readers were invited to read stories in free community storytelling sessions. Other guest readers included Badger from The Wave, local children’s author Rhian Howells, representatives from the RNLI, from South Wales Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the team from Cariad Defibrillators Wales.
After much thought I chose to read ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ by Julia Donaldson; a firm favourite with a lot of children. It was great fun bringing the characters to life using different voices and accents. It was fantastic to see the children’s and the parents’ faces light up and the smiles and laughter as they were taken to a different magical world through storytelling. The children clearly enjoyed the book and looked forward to hearing the next story.
My Assembly colleague, the Trefnydd and Minister for Finance, Rebecca Evans AM, was also another guest reader and I enjoyed hearing her reading another Julia Donaldson book, ‘Room on the Broom’ to a very enthusiastic audience.
