Ford Bridgend Taskforce meets for the first time

The Ford Bridgend Taskforce met for the first time today following the company’s announcement last month to close the Bridgend plant.

The workers at the company’s Bridgend Engine Plant were dealt a bitter blow last month when the company announced its intention to begin a consultation to close its Bridgend plant in September 2020.

The Taskforce will be chaired by Professor Richard Parry Jones, chair of the Welsh Automotive Forum and a prominent and extremely well regarded figure within the automotive sector. He will lead the Taskforce which will include representatives from Ford UK, Welsh Government, Office of the Secretary of State for Wales, BEIS, Trade Unions, Bridgend County Borough Council and others.

The Taskforce will be jointly sponsored by the Economy Minister Ken Skates and the Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns MP.

Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones has been asked by the Welsh Government to lead on one of the key areas that the Taskforce will be looking at. Mr Jones will be leading on work focussing on the wider impact on the community and securing a resilient future for the area and wider region.

Mr Jones said ” I stand ready to assist the Taskforce however I can.”
