It was a pleasure for Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones to join a panel of AMs to look back at 20 years of devolution. Hosted by ITV Wales for the National Assembly’s Gwlad Future Wales Festival, it was an opportunity to look back at the political period leading up to the yes vote and what has been achieved during the first 20 years and to discuss the hopes and aspirations for the next 20 years.
On the panel with Mr Jones were Dai Lloyd AM, the Llywydd Elin Jones AM, David Melding AM and Lord Mike German. All were elected to the National Assembly for Wales in 1999 and all bar one, Lord German, are still Assembly Members. Lord Mike German now sits in the House of Lords. The event was chaired by ITV Wales’ Sion Jenkins, presenter of Ein Byd, and very much a child of devolution.
Class of 1999 was the opening event in GWLAD | Future Wales Festival. GWLAD forms part of the Assembly’s programme of activity to mark the 20th anniversary of devolution in Wales. The Festival programme, delivered in partnership with various organisations aimed to have a little something for everyone – a mixture of performances, music, comedy and thought provoking lectures, talks and panel discussions on a range of topics such as journalism, sport, politics and culture.
