Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones recently met with Mike Clarke, Director of Porthcawl Harbourside, Stuart Bentley, Architectural & Design Consultant and Barrie Metcalf, Board Member, to have an update on the Porthcawl Maritime Centre. Full planning permission has been granted for the development.
The Maritime Centre will house Porthcawl Sea Cadets and the Welsh Surfing Federation as well as SeaQuest Coastal Science and Discovery Centre and a wealth of leisure and health facilities. There will also be a performance space/Auditorium and marina services.
The project has also attracted EU funding, lottery funding and Welsh Government funding together with private and third sector funding.
The Centre will be built on Cosy Corner, adjacent to the marina. The development has the potential to accommodate 55 jobs as well as supporting jobs during the construction phase. It is hoped that work on site will begin in the autumn of this year and that the Centre will take between 18 months to two years to build.
The meeting was also an opportunity to discuss wider issues about potential regeneration of Porthcawl. There was a discussion about how resilient the town has been, how the town has much to offer and the importance of raising the town’s profile.
