Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones was delighted to visit Porthcawl Museum again this month to see for himself the changes to the museum, to have a look at the new exhibitions including the new Victorian school room and the new Maritime Exhibition and to leave a comment in the visitors book. He would certainly encourage people to pop in and take a look.
As part of the Maritime Exhibition, there is a special feature on the SS Samtampa. 70 years ago, the SS Samtampa was wrecked on Sker Point, Porthcawl, with the loss of all her thirty nine crew members, together with the Mumbles Lifeboat with her eight crew members who also lost their lives. It was fascinating to see artefacts from the ship, models of both the Samtampa and the Mumbles Lifeboat and watch clips from Pathé and Dangerous Coast DVD.
Before having a tour of the museum, Mr Jones joined some of the many friends and supporters of the museum at the Y Centre for a coffee, cake and a chat. They were all taking part in a quiz and he was delighted to discover that he was one of the answers in the picture round.
