Ford workers at the company’s Bridgend Engine Plant were dealt a bitter blow last month when the company announced its intention to begin a consultation to close its Bridgend plant in September 2020. I watched the plant being built and the news is a blow to the solar plexus of the town of Bridgend. There was no warning. For forty years, the workers did what was asked of them and this is the way they have been repaid.
I have continually sought assurances from the Economy and Transport Minister that all that can be done is being done and that the Welsh Government will look to provide a future for them and for the town. The workers are also worried about their pensions and I have asked the Welsh Government to look at this.
I welcome the decision by the Welsh Government to set up a Taskforce to work with national and local partners to help find a sustainable and long-term solution for the plant and I will do all I can to assist the Taskforce. I certainly won’t give up fighting for those workers and working with the trade unions, but we must be prepared for all eventualities.
