We all want to see more vibrant town centres. Last month, the Welsh Government launched its Support Your High Street campaign to celebrate the valuable contribution that high streets make to community life and to the Welsh economy. Both retailers and shoppers were encouraged to get behind the campaign. As part of the campaign, people were encouraged to tweet or post on facebook about why the high street was so special to them and were encouraged to use the # SupportHighStreets.
I have lived in Bridgend most of my life and I want to see the town centre thrive. I hold regular discussions with local traders about local issues, the importance of the local high street and the on-going issue of how to increase footfall. During my meetings, there is certainly no lack of passion and ideas for improvement from the local traders themselves. Indeed, I was particularly interested to see the latest initiative to encourage shoppers to support their high street launched by the Bridgend Traders last week. In conjunction with The Gazette and supported by Bridgend Council, the Bridgend Traders have launched their “Yule Love Bridgend” campaign to encourage people this Christmas to buy at least one gift from the high street. To generate further interest, they have asked people to tweet or upload to facebook their pledges to buy from the high street using the # YuleLoveBridgend with the aim of getting it trending on social media.
Since the launch, a number of people have already visited the Facebook site and the site has attracted a number of “Likes”. It is great to see them being so pro-active.
I would encourage people to support their local high street not just at Christmas time but all the year round.
