Visit to St Clare’s School

A few weeks before Christmas, Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones paid a visit to St Clare’s School in Porthcawl.

During his visit, he formally presented a cheque to the year 9 Physics students who for the third year running have won the Shell Bright Ideas Stem Welsh Regional Award.

Mr Jones said “ It was lovely to meet the students, our aspiring pysicists of the future, from the winning team ‘Staight Outta of Science’ (SOS) and to say congratulations in person on their fantastic achievement. It was really interesting to hear about how they came up with their innovative idea and also to see their model. It is good to see our young people so interested and motivated in science. In an ever changing economy, it is essential that our young poeple are equipped wwith the right skills. Science is certainly an achievable and desirable career path.

Also during his visit, Mr Jones officially opened the school’s new sixth form block and took part in a Question and Answer session with the sixth formers. The School Sixth Form block was ready for the start of the autumn term. Following significant refurbishment, the sixth form block has its own kitchen/dining area and state of the art furniture for study and socialising.

Mr Jones added “It was a great pleasure to meet students from the Sixth Form and to take part in their Q&A session. The students certainly kept me on my toes with a broad range of questions including on Brexit, the NHS, pursuing a career in politics and on education issues.”
