On the 2nd July 2017, Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones was honoured to attend a special service at Stormy Down to commemorate those who served at RAF Stormy Down during WWII.
During the dedication service, a memorial stone was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan Mrs Kate Thomas CVO. Mr Jones was very pleased to have been asked to lay a wreath on behalf of the Welsh Government. Other dignitaries were also invited to lay a wreath, including the Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns on behalf of the UK Government, the Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Kate Thomas and a representative from the military and veterans.
After the service, there was a fly past from a Hurricane and a Spitfire. The Red Arrows also took part to mark the occasion.
Mr Jones said “It was a very moving service and the unveiling of the Memorial Stone was a fitting and lasting tribute.”
Mr Jones added “It has been fascinating to learn about the importance of Stormy Down and the part it played during the Second World War as I had always assumed that it was a dummy airfield.”
